The Texas Media Manager will assist the Texas Media Director in managing and implementing strategic communications plans to advance the goals of Environmental Defense Fund, assuring broader recognition of the organization's advocacy efforts among elected and appointed officials, opinion leaders, potential funders and the public at large in Texas.
The position will be full time and based in Austin. Role and responsibilities will be comparable to a public relations agency account coordinator.
 
Responsibilities: The Media Manager will assist the Media Director in all areas of communications and will be responsible for:
 
. Developing and maintaining positive working relationships with targeted online, print and broadcast journalists, editorial writers and columnists, as well as with other media influentials;
. Garnering, tracking and marketing earned media exposure in Texas media outlets;
. Executing press strategies including press conferences, one-on-one meetings with the media press releases and other written materials and staff training for media opportunities;
. Supporting the program staff in developing campaign and non-campaign strategies and materials;
. Helping to maintain electronic files, including media lists press clips, collateral materials, etc.
 
Specific Responsibilities include:
 
. Assists with the development and execution of strategic communications plans for campaign and program activities and for targeted branding efforts in Texas.
. Assists with the cultivation of reporter relationships, and creates/distributes press materials under deadline pressure.
. Monitors press response to breaking news and legislative events.
. Helps develop and execute long-term strategic communications planning while maintaining an opportunistic approach to daily, breaking news events.
. Serves the communications needs of the regional program, development and communications staff.
 
Skills/Requirements:
 
. Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, communications or marketing; master's a plus
. A minimum of three years media experience, preferably in a political or issue advocacy context.
. Environmental media experience is a plus.
. Practical, real-world experience in public relations and communications, is preferred.
. Excellent writing, proofing and editing skills
. Experience working on local and/or Texas statewide press outreach
. Excellent telephone, oral communication and presenting skills
. Ability to keep varied projects with competing deadlines moving to completion
. Detail oriented; organized; self starter; able to work well with remote supervision
. Communications experience with environmental advocacy organizations a distinct plus
. Proficiency in office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Internet; familiarity with cutting-edge communication technologies preferred (e.g., Vocus)
