Overall function:   As the Web Managing Editor you will work with the teams that manage EDF’s online presence, from our main website, www.edf.org and our social networks, to our content distribution partnerships and our outreach to Members and Activists. The Managing Editor is responsible for envisioning and creating long-lived educational and explanatory features, helping transform our currently print-driven communications into engaging online assets, posting and producing daily web content, and maintaining the editorial focus of the website. The varied responsibilities of this position will leverage your wide-ranging skills and provide a constant array of challenges and growth opportunities in the field of cutting-edge communications. If you are a skilled online story teller who understands and is fascinated by how people interact with material online, this position is for you.
 
Responsibilities
 
Envision and create educational and explanatory features:
  • In collaboration with leaders of our key Programs and editors, develop a high-level online communications strategy that leverages our online assets to effectively explain and differentiate our work.
  • Occasionally research and write original content, select appropriate accompanying photos, and create interactive features.
  • Coordinate with internal and external resources to develop and promote content.
 
Transform print communications into engaging online assets:
  • Adapt material created for print to work well online and support online communications needs.
  • Collaborate with the centralized writing team, our Web Producers, and Membership groups on identifying and producing relevant features and content.
  • Edit and/or write headlines, captions, descriptions, teasers, and summaries to accompany and promote articles.
Assist with posting and producing daily online coverage:
  • Update the homepage with fresh articles and content. 
  • Work with our web producers in the development and implementation of main section pages and hubs.
  • Copy edit existing offline content or create original material for the web, secure photos and rights.
  • Post articles, videos, photo essays, and other multimedia content. 
  • Work with staff experts, Web producers and media staff to keep materials current and reflecting our communications priorities.
  • Occasional video, photo, and audio editing.
  • Attend planning and content meetings
  Maintain the editorial focus of the website:
  • Participate in evaluating new web and web 2.0 technologies and implementing then as needed.
  • Manage web content for maximizing visitors, time on site, search engine traffic/optimization, and other key performance indicators. Track performance and assist with analyzing opportunities for improvement.
 Additional duties may include:
  • Curate the content of the website and develop a monthly Member-focused e-newsletter.
  • Assist in the creation and development of Member-focused online sections, promotions, and campaigns.
  • Keep abreast of developments in fields relevant to EDF. This may involve researching specific areas of interest, attending conferences, and doing informational interviews.
  • Attend staff meetings and other organizational meetings aimed at setting the direction of EDF’s web communications.
  • As needed, edit blog posts written by staff experts for style and online best practices.

 Qualifications

  •  At least two years of experience as an online writer and editor; experience managing teams of writers and designers on deadline.
  • Knowledge of HTML and CSS.
  • Experience posting content (including videos, photos, and content maps/collections) within an online content management system.
  • Experience with video and photo editing preferred .
  • Passionate about web-based and interactive media.
  • Well organized—experienced with juggling multiple, deadline-driven tasks.
  • Flexible and able to work both independently and in close collaboration with writers, developing consensus among diverse approaches and opinions. .
  • Meticulous about accuracy and grammar.
  • Passionate about making the world a better place.
  • Sense of humor.
